If you’re too passive about this process, then you could find yourself getting taken advantage of. It’s a must that you sink your teeth into every part of the home buying journey. Even if you’ve hired an army of lawyers, brokers, and financial advisors, you need to do some work yourself.

The fact is that unless you’re checking all the details and the paperwork, any information you get is going to be secondhand. You should put yourself in the best possible position by always having an eye on the available facts.

Are you being overcharged for the property?

 

This is something that a lot of people forget to check! Sure, you might consider trying to haggle for the house. Most people decide to try their luck by offering a slightly lower amount for a given property. And the chances are you’ll actually have quite a bit of success doing it. But what if, even at a reduced price, you’re being overcharged for a given property?

You need to check the neighborhood for the average cost of similar properties. Of course, if you’re buying the property to rent it out, then you’ll also need to check for the average rental prices in the area. It’s always possible that the price you’re being offered is way above what it’s actually worth. Do your research and use the data to back up a smaller offer.

Make sure you get the property inspected!

 

You can’t just trust surface appearances. Never judge a book by its cover, they say. It’s important to remember this when you’re looking for a home. After all, a home isn’t just its size, furnishings, distance from useful amenities, a nice garden. Those are the things that will immediately strike you, yes. But a house is also everything under the floors, in the walls, on the roof.

That’s my elaborate way of saying that a home may have problems that won’t be visible. It could have plumbing problems. It could have a leaky roof. The electricity might be janky. You need to know about these things before making a purchase. Get the property inspected before making an decisions.
